Reddit Stock Rallies After Baird Highlights AI Licensing Upside

Reddit Stock AI Licensing

A Baird analyst argued that the market already reflects a weak outcome for Reddit’s coming AI data-licensing renewals, shifting investors’ attention toward the potential upside.

Reddit stock jumped 9.3% on Wednesday, closing at $158.11 after opening nearly flat at $144.02.

The clearest catalyst was a new research note from Baird analyst Colin Sebastian. He kept a Neutral rating and a $185 price target, but argued that Reddit’s share price already reflected something close to the firm’s low-end scenario for upcoming data-licensing renewals. Baird’s base and bull cases implied about $10 and $20 of additional value per share, respectively, and the firm assigned a combined 65% probability to those more favorable outcomes, according to Investing.com.

Reddit did not announce a new contract, financial update, or other material development Wednesday.

The jump appears to be from Baird reframed a known risk. If a disappointing renewal outcome is already largely reflected in the price, then a merely decent agreement could create upside.

Nearly 12% of Reddit’s public float was sold short as of mid-August. That positioning may have made the stock more responsive once it started moving higher, although public data cannot confirm how much short covering occurred during Wednesday’s session.

The rally comes less than three weeks after Reddit joined the S&P 500, another development that increased demand for the shares without directly changing the underlying business.

Why the licensing renewals carry so much weight

Reddit has content-licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI, giving the companies access to the platform’s continuously updated collection of human conversations. Google’s agreement was originally reported to be worth about $60 million a year. Investors are now trying to determine what those relationships will be worth when the contracts come up for renewal.

At a high level, an AI company can try to collect public pages on its own or pay for structured, reliable access. Scraping may be cheaper, but it can also be incomplete, delayed, and vulnerable to technical or legal restrictions. An official feed becomes more valuable when an AI product needs current information at scale.

Recent anti-bot changes across the web add context to that argument. Cloudflare’s Adaptive Intelligence product is designed to adjust defenses as automated traffic changes, and the company plans to block AI training and agent crawlers by default on ad-supported pages for new domains beginning September 15. Website owners are gaining more ways to create friction around unpaid automated access.

That backdrop could improve Reddit’s bargaining position. AI companies still have alternatives, and Reddit must balance licensing fees against the traffic and distribution it receives from major technology partners.

The advertising business still drives the economics

The licensing debate has an outsized effect on sentiment, yet remains a small part of Reddit’s reported revenue. In the second quarter, total revenue reached $805 million, up 61% from a year earlier. Advertising revenue grew 64% to $762 million, while other revenue increased 24% to $43 million. Reddit earned $253 million, equal to a 31.4% net margin.

Other revenue includes content licensing and products sold directly to users. The entire category represented only about 5.3% of quarterly revenue, so licensing is not replacing advertising as Reddit’s main economic engine. It can still matter to overall profit and valuation. Delivering data under an additional agreement should require far less incremental spending than generating the same amount of advertising revenue, while a stronger renewal would confirm that Reddit’s content has durable value to AI companies.

The core business matters more than the renewal headlines over time. Reddit’s advertising growth remains strong, but management also said search referrals became “choppy” during the quarter. The best outcome is a combination of better licensing economics, continued access to outside distribution, and more users visiting Reddit directly.

Wednesday’s rally makes sense as a repricing of those possibilities. It is not confirmation that Reddit has secured better terms. Until a renewal is announced, the size and durability of the AI-data opportunity remain open questions, while advertising execution will continue to determine most of the company’s results.
