Headlines Tell You What They Bought. The Filing Tells You How Much.

"Buffett is buying Alphabet" makes a great headline. It doesn't tell you how big the position is, what else he sold that quarter, or that the filing came out six weeks after the quarter ended. Super Investors shows you the whole filing.

A headline

"Buffett is buying Alphabet!"

  • One stock, without the rest of the portfolio around it
  • No position size, so a small nibble sounds like a big bet
  • Rarely says which quarter, or what got sold to pay for it

Research, Not Copying

Their Idea. Your Homework.

A filing tells you what someone bought months ago, not whether it's a good idea for you today. That's why every stock in these lists shows its Stock Score, P/E and revenue growth using today's numbers, right next to who bought it.

What a 13F Can and Can't Tell You

13F filings are public, official and useful. They're also limited. Here's what to keep in mind:

Up to 45 days late

It's not real-time

A filing shows holdings on the last day of a quarter and can arrive 45 days later. By then, the investor may have moved on.

No purchase prices

It's not what they paid

Filings list shares and their quarter-end value. We price changes at the quarter-end close, so cost basis and returns are approximate.

US-listed longs only

It's not everything they own

Cash, shorts, bonds and foreign listings aren't in a 13F. It's a slice of a portfolio, not all of it.

End of quarter only

It's not every trade

A position bought and sold within one quarter never shows up, because a filing only shows what was held on its last day.

A Few Ways to Use It

You know your strategy better than we do. Here are some starting points.

Find where they agree

Most Held

When many experienced investors own the same business, it's a sensible place to start your own research. Check Avg Weight too: being in 20 portfolios isn't the same as being a big part of them.

Spot fresh ideas

New Buys

A brand-new position is a deliberate choice. See what was started last quarter, by whom, and how much of the portfolio went into it.

Look at the size of the bet

Largest Positions

A 1% position and a 40% position say very different things. Find the stocks investors trusted with the biggest share of their money.

Read the room

Most Bought and Most Sold

See what investors wanted more and less of last quarter. Selling isn't always a bad sign: people sell to take profits or raise cash.

Activity

Follow one investor through every quarter since 2020. How concentrated are they? How long do they hold? What do they do when prices fall?

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Super Investors

What is a super investor?

A well-known investor or investment firm whose holdings are public through 13F filings, like Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway, Bill Ackman at Pershing Square or Carl Icahn. Stock Unlock tracks 40+ of them, from individual managers to long-running funds and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.

What is a 13F filing?

A quarterly report to the SEC. Investment managers with more than $100 million in US-listed stocks must list what they held on the last day of each quarter, within 45 days of the quarter ending. Every Super Investor portfolio is rebuilt from those filings.

How up to date is the data?

We check for new filings every night. Each filing shows holdings on the last day of a quarter and can arrive up to 45 days later, so holdings as of September 30 usually show up by mid-November. Most managers file close to the deadline, so a new quarter fills in over a few weeks.

Can I see what they paid, or their real returns?

No. A 13F lists share counts and their value at the end of the quarter, not purchase prices or trade dates. Buys and sells are worked out by comparing one filing with the next and priced at the quarter-end close, and history starts in 2020. So cost basis and returns on these portfolios are approximate, not the investor's own results.

Why isn't every position an investor owns listed?

A 13F only covers long positions in US-listed stocks and ETFs above the SEC's reporting threshold. Cash, shorts, bonds and shares listed outside the US aren't in it, and we leave out options. A position opened and closed within one quarter never appears either. It's a slice of a portfolio, not all of it.

How far back does the history go?

To the first quarter of 2020. You can step through each investor's Activity quarter by quarter, see every quarter in Holdings Over Time, and pick past quarters on the Most Held, Most Bought, Most Sold, New Buys and Largest Positions tabs.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it's free on every plan, and you can browse every investor, quarter and tab without an account. Overall Scores show for every holding. The individual Stock Score categories need Pro or Unlimited, except on the stocks whose Stock Scores are free to view. Compare plans.

Is this investment advice?

No. Super Investors shows what's in public filings, and Stock Unlock doesn't give financial advice. A filing can be months old by the time you see it, and an investor's goals and timeline aren't yours. It works best as a source of ideas you then research yourself, with Stock Scores, financials and the DCF calculator.

Is Super Investors in the mobile app?

Not yet. Super Investors is on the Stock Unlock website, and works in your phone's browser too.
